Description

Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a savory dish featuring juicy hamburger patties smothered in a creamy sauce and topped with melted cheese, perfect for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ lbs (680 g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely grated
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil or butter (for browning)
  • 2 tbsp butter (for sauce)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or milk)
  • 1/2 tsp mustard powder (optional)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • Chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, onion, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Shape into 6 thick patties.
  2. Heat a skillet with oil or butter over medium-high heat and sear patties on both sides until browned (about 3–4 minutes per side). Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, melt butter and whisk in flour to make a roux. Gradually add beef broth while whisking until smooth and slightly thickened.
  4. Stir in cream, mustard powder, salt, and pepper. Add half the cheese and stir until melted into a creamy sauce.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Arrange the browned patties in a baking dish. Pour the sauce over the patties and sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top.
  6. Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes, or until bubbly and golden.
  7. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or buttered green beans.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, you can substitute ground turkey for ground beef.
  • Feel free to add vegetables like mushrooms or bell peppers to the sauce for extra flavor.
  • This dish can be made ahead of time and reheated before serving.
