Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a savory dish featuring juicy hamburger patties smothered in a creamy sauce and topped with melted cheese, perfect for a comforting meal.

- 1 ½ lbs (680 g) ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely grated
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 tbsp oil or butter (for browning)
- 2 tbsp butter (for sauce)
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (or milk)
- 1/2 tsp mustard powder (optional)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese
- Salt & pepper, to taste
- Chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix ground beef, onion, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Shape into 6 thick patties.
- Heat a skillet with oil or butter over medium-high heat and sear patties on both sides until browned (about 3–4 minutes per side). Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt butter and whisk in flour to make a roux. Gradually add beef broth while whisking until smooth and slightly thickened.
- Stir in cream, mustard powder, salt, and pepper. Add half the cheese and stir until melted into a creamy sauce.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Arrange the browned patties in a baking dish. Pour the sauce over the patties and sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top.
- Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes, or until bubbly and golden.
- Garnish with chopped parsley and serve with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or buttered green beans.
Notes
- For a lighter version, you can substitute ground turkey for ground beef.
- Feel free to add vegetables like mushrooms or bell peppers to the sauce for extra flavor.
- This dish can be made ahead of time and reheated before serving.
