Description

Crispy golden onion rings stuffed with gooey melted cheese — the ultimate comfort snack or party appetizer!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions (cut into thick rings)
  • 8 oz (225 g) mozzarella cheese (cut into sticks or slices)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs (beaten)
  • 2 tbsp milk (for egg wash)
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Vegetable or canola oil (for frying)
  • Fresh parsley (chopped, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Slice onions into thick rings and separate.
  2. Place a smaller onion ring inside a larger one, leaving space between.
  3. Fill the gap with mozzarella slices/sticks, pressing gently to fit.
  4. Freeze stuffed rings for 20 minutes (helps hold shape while frying).
  5. Set up breading station: Bowl 1 with flour (seasoned with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper), Bowl 2 with beaten eggs and milk, Bowl 3 with panko breadcrumbs.
  6. Coat each stuffed ring in flour, then dip in egg wash, then coat fully in breadcrumbs.
  7. For extra crunch, repeat egg + breadcrumb coating.
  8. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Fry onion rings 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  10. Drain on paper towels.
  11. Garnish with parsley.
  12. Serve hot with marinara sauce, ranch, or garlic aioli for dipping.

Notes

  • Freezing the stuffed rings helps maintain their shape while frying.
  • For a spicier kick, add cayenne pepper to the breadcrumb mixture.
  • These onion rings can be made ahead of time and frozen before frying.
