  • ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup diced apples (peeled, small chunks)
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (for crumb topping)
  • ¼ cup brown sugar (for crumb topping)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar (for crumb topping)
  • ½ tsp cinnamon (for crumb topping)
  • ¼ cup cold butter, cubed (for crumb topping)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 23 tbsp milk (for glaze)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk egg, brown sugar, buttermilk, applesauce, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Stir wet mixture into dry ingredients until just combined. Fold in diced apples.
  5. Spoon batter into the donut pan, filling about ¾ full.
  6. Mix flour, sugars, cinnamon, and cold butter with a fork until crumbly. Sprinkle generously over donut batter.
  7. Bake for 14–16 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool slightly before removing from pan.
  8. Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle over cooled donuts.
