Description

A delicious Patty Melt featuring caramelized onions and a secret sauce that elevates the classic sandwich to new heights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ tsp sugar (optional, to speed up caramelization)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20)
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 4 slices cheddar or Swiss cheese
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp pickle relish
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • 8 slices rye bread (or sourdough)
  • 4 tbsp butter, softened

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tbsp butter.
  2. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Stir occasionally for 15–20 minutes until soft and golden brown.
  3. Add sugar (if using) to help speed up caramelization.
  4. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, cook 1–2 minutes more, then remove from skillet.
  5. In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, relish, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Mix well and set aside.
  6. Form ground beef into 4 thin patties, slightly larger than your bread slices. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. In the same skillet, cook patties over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes per side until fully cooked. Place cheese on top of each patty, cover, and let melt.
  8. Spread butter on one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered side, spread a layer of secret sauce.
  9. Add a cheesy burger patty, a generous scoop of caramelized onions, then top with another slice of bread (buttered side out).
  10. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook each sandwich for 2–3 minutes per side until the bread is golden and crispy, and the cheese is gooey.
  11. Slice in half and serve immediately with extra sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, substitute the beef with a plant-based burger.
  • Feel free to customize the secret sauce ingredients to your taste.
  • Serve with pickles or chips for a complete meal.
