A delicious Patty Melt featuring caramelized onions and a secret sauce that elevates the classic sandwich to new heights.
Ingredients

- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- Pinch of salt
- ½ tsp sugar (optional, to speed up caramelization)
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20)
- Salt & pepper, to taste
- 4 slices cheddar or Swiss cheese
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- 1 tsp pickle relish
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp smoked paprika
- 8 slices rye bread (or sourdough)
- 4 tbsp butter, softened
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tbsp butter.
- Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Stir occasionally for 15–20 minutes until soft and golden brown.
- Add sugar (if using) to help speed up caramelization.
- Stir in Worcestershire sauce, cook 1–2 minutes more, then remove from skillet.
- In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, relish, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Mix well and set aside.
- Form ground beef into 4 thin patties, slightly larger than your bread slices. Season with salt and pepper.
- In the same skillet, cook patties over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes per side until fully cooked. Place cheese on top of each patty, cover, and let melt.
- Spread butter on one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered side, spread a layer of secret sauce.
- Add a cheesy burger patty, a generous scoop of caramelized onions, then top with another slice of bread (buttered side out).
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook each sandwich for 2–3 minutes per side until the bread is golden and crispy, and the cheese is gooey.
- Slice in half and serve immediately with extra sauce for dipping.
Notes
- For a vegetarian option, substitute the beef with a plant-based burger.
- Feel free to customize the secret sauce ingredients to your taste.
